Mother's Day 2011

Mother’s Day is traditionally the second Sunday in May in Canada, it is not a federal holiday, but is a popular day for many.  This year Mother’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, May 8, and it is a time to thank the special people in your life.

People in Canada express their gratitude towards mothers and mother figures on this day.  Mother figures may include step-mothers, mothers-in-law, guardians (eg. foster parents), and family friends. It is the time for people to thank mothers and mother figures who took the time to care for them and help them through life’s challenges.

Some people give cards, flowers, or chocolates, and/or make handmade items or special meals on Mother’s Day. Others take their mothers or mother figures to the movies, a restaurant, cafĂ©, or a day in a park.  Some mothers and mother figures also receive special gifts such as jewelry, clothing, accessories, and gift vouchers for services or products.

Stevie Nicks Calls New Album Her Own Little ...

Stevie Nicks says it wasn't her intention to take a decade between solo albums.

Nicks — whose "In Your Dreams," the follow-up to 2001's "Trouble in Shangri-La," comes out Tuesday — says that she was ready to start work on a solo set in 2005 after touring with Fleetwood Mac.

"I was definitely ready to do a record," Nicks recalls, "but the powers that be, the people that surrounded me, pretty much said, 'Don't bother. It's not a good time. The music business is in a terrible place. There's no money, and the Internet piracy is taking over.'

"I didn't know what to say, because I'm not a computer person and I don't have a computer and I don't Facebook or whatever. So I just said, 'OK.' If I hadn't been so exhausted from 135 shows I might have fought back on that a little, but I just didn't."

Osama bin Laden Is Dead

Osama bin Laden is dead. The leader of the al-Qaeda terrorist network, responsible for the deadly September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, was killed today in a fire fight in Pakistan, President Barack Obama confirmed Sunday night.

“Tonight I can report to the American people and to the world, that the United States has conducted an operation that has killed Osama bin Laden — the leader of al-Qaeda and a terrorist who is responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children,” said President Obama in a late-night press conference, which aired live on the official White House website.

Minutes before the official White House news conference was supposed to convene, the word began leaking out over Twitter: Did the U.S. have Osama bin Laden’s dead body—the body of the man considered the mastermind behind al-Qaeda and the September 11th attacks—in possession? For several minutes, CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer danced around the topic, noting that this was probably something that had been in the works for “a very long time,” before Obama offered an official confirmation: Osama bin Laden had been killed by U.S. Special Forces.

On the eighth anniversary of George W. Bush's famous "Mission Accomplished" speech, President Obama was able to definitively say bin Laden was confirmed dead and U.S. forces were in possession of his body.

Anderson Cooper Laughs Off Seth Meyers' Tight ...

CNN’s Anderson Cooper didn’t take offense at the barbs that Saturday Night Live writer Seth Meyers directed at him at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner held Saturday night in Washington, D.C.

While Donald Trump didn’t crack a smile during the steady drumbeat of jokes Meyers aimed at him -- and he could be seen by the CSpan cameras beating a hasty exit as soon as the dinner ended -- Cooper took the ribbing in stride.

After the dinner, Cooper tweeted, “I’m a huge @sethmeyers21 fan. Its an honor to be mocked by him.”

In a riff on various members of the media, Meyers -- who has parodied Cooper before on Saturday Night Live -- made fun of Cooper’s penchant for tight t-shirts.

"You can always tell how much danger Anderson Cooper is in by how tight his clothing is," the "Saturday Night Live" star said. "If he's in a bulky, yellow slicker, then it's a hurricane that's still off shore. If he's in a khaki vest, he's maybe in the Green Zone in Baghdad. But if he's in a child-size white t-shirt, bullets are flying, he's getting punched, he's pulling kittens out of the rubble. So what I'm saying is, if you ever see Anderson Cooper with his shirt off, turn off your television and run."

Nice to see the Prez and his best friends in "journalism" yucking it up while we are losing three Wars and and headed towards total economic collapse and the south is still digging up the dead from the a disaster...400 missing.

Jason Sudeikis Comments On January Jones’s ...

Jason Sudeikis has shown up in entertainment headlines lately, bothbecause of his recently announced gig as MTV Movie Awards host and because his former girlfriend, January Jones, recently announced her pregnancy.

January Jones and Jason Sudeikis have been stepping out together for weeks and attended the Emmys together, but she claims he still hasn't gotten her clothes off.

"He's never seen me naked, nor will he after those comments," January told People at the Emmys.

She was referring to comments Jason made last week on 'Lopez Tonight' (scroll down to watch).

Jason confirmed they were dating, and when asked whether he had seen her "naked and everything," Jason first said, "I don't want to get into it." Then: "I'm kidding. I do want to get into it! I do, and I have!"

January and Jason were snapped together at a pre-Emmys party on Saturday. Here they are at the Emmys on Sunday, where they sat next to each other in the front row.

Sudeikis, who came to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner tonight to support friend, “SNL” colleague and dinner emcee Seth Meyers, took a couple of moments to speak about both subjects.

When I asked if he had any comment on the recent news about Jones, who split with Sudeikis back in January, he said, “I’d rather — yes but no.”

Tiger Woods: Why He Doesn't Play, Or Care What ...

Tiger Woods suffered an injury three weeks ago at Augusta on the 17th hole in the third round. According to sources it's a level one, mild sprain on the same left knee that has nagged him throughout his illustrious career.

Surprisingly Tiger's usual theatrics of showing that he's in pain weren't on display as he was fist-pumping birdie putts on the first nine at Augusta the following day.

This is the same guy that beat Rocco Mediate on one leg (essentially) in a 19 hole playoff on a torn ACL and stress fractures to win his 14th major at Torrey Pines in 2008.

That's all a distant memory now as the infamous "level one mild sprain" will keep him out of action at Quail Hollow at the Wells Fargo Championship next weekend.

Or is it the unprecedented 79 Tiger posted there last season in the second round to miss the cut that has him not returning to Charlotte this year?

I hope Tiger gets backs to his winning ways as well. I hope the swing change does work. Golf is better for everyone when Tiger is competing and winning.

A swing change in golf may be the most difficult things to do in all of sports. I agree that the new swing may be better and help him stay healthy. I was just pointing out that the change and subsequent work he's doing with Sean Foley is another contributing factor as to why he isn't playing as frequently.

But you're correct, all the Isleworth thxgiving nonsense and infidelity is in the past, people just want to see great golf, which usually includes Tiger playing at a high level.

Kate Middleton's Wedding Dress: Design Reminiscent of Grace Kelly's

East Falls' Grace Kelly was married to Prince Ranier III of Monaco fifty-five years ago.

Today, the fashion columns are buzzing with images from Kelly's nuptials to the Prince.  You see, Kelly's elegant dress must have been pinned up on Kate Middleton's dress designer's inspiration board.

At last, the moment the world has been waiting for: Kate Middleton revealed her wedding dress, a long-sleeved lace and ivory satin design by Sarah Burton, the creative director for the late Alexander McQueen.

Looking both modern and traditional, Middleton recalled another commoner who became royalty, actress Grace Kelly, who married Rainier III, the Prince of Monaco, and became The Princess of Monaco.

Designer Mark Badgley, who watched the wedding from his Long Island home with partner James Mischka called the dress a "classic Grace Kelly gown that appeals to modern brides."

their waistlines with a tight waist and billowing skirt.

Their decolletee was gently highlighted with a v-shaped neckline and full-length lace sleeves.

Kelly's confection was designed by famed Hollywood cosume designer Helen Rose.  Kate's creation was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

Princess Kate donned a Cartier tiara - her something "borrowed" - from the Queen, naturally.

What do you think?  Whatever your thoughts may be, these dresses are elegant, demure and totally beautiful. Timeless.

Famous clients include Sarah Jessica Parker, Cate Blanchett, Kate Moss and Michelle Obama, who wore the so-called "Poppy" dress for a state dinner.

FBI Alerts China-Related Wire Transfer

Some U.S. companies may unwittingly be helping to provide millions of dollars in illicit financing to businesses in China. U.S. businesses to be on the lookout for online account takeovers and fraudulent Automated Clearing House (ACH) transactions.

The businesses in the U.S. lost more than $11 million in the past year due to online scams, which included stealing of banking credentials in fraudulent wire transfers to companies in China. These China-related wire transfer fraud victimized small-to- medium scale businesses, FBI said; as written by CNET News Senior writer Elinor Mills. Twenty incidents were recorded from March 2010 to April 2011.

(CNET)

Small and medium-size businesses in the U.S. lost more than $11 million over the past year in online scams in which stolen banking credentials were used in fraudulent wire transfers to companies in China, the FBI said.

There were 20 such incidents between March 2010 and April 2011, affecting companies and public institutions in the U.S. that tend to have accounts at local community banks and credit unions, some of which use third-party service providers for online banking services, according to the agency. The amounts transferred at any one time ranged from tens of thousands of dollars to nearly $1 million.

This is sad and scary. Now that the world is mostly online, providing effective security measures must be in place. Thanks, Andy. Rated up!

Sarah Palin sued by Alaska activist over traffic

Sarah Palin is being sued for more than $100,000 by an longtime Alaska political activist who said the hockey mom tried to railroad him while she was governor.

Theodore "Chip" Thoma of Juneau alleges Palin launched a campaign "to punish, embarrass, discredit and silence" him after he raised serious concerns about traffic in the neighborhood surrounding the governor's mansion.

An activist is suing Sarah Palin for at least $100,000, saying she undertook a campaign to "punish, embarrass, discredit and silence" him while she was Alaska's governor.

The lawsuit was filed in state court by Chip Thoma and first reported by TMZ.com.

Palin's attorney hadn't seen the lawsuit and didn't immediately comment.

It dates to 2009, after Palin returned to Juneau from her failed vice presidential bid.

Thoma's attorney, James McGowan, says Thoma complained about tour bus traffic on the narrow, windy streets around the governor's mansion. McGowan says Palin twisted Thoma's actions to make it seem like he had engaged in "some unsavory and lunatic" campaign against the Palins.

The complaint is based in part on a leaked draft manuscript of an aide of Palin's at that time.

Sarah Palin took pleasure at Katie Couric's departure from the "CBS Evening News." Couric, of course, conducted the infamous 2008 interviews with Palin which caused.

Victoria Beckham at the royal wedding: Rate the hat

Wedding guests David and Victoria Beckham described today's ceremony as "beautiful and heartfelt".

The royal wedding is upon us. And so are the hats.

The perpetually fashion-forward Victoria Beckham has opted for a petite navy blue chapeau with accents best described as — and forgive me, I’m using technical fashion terms here — squiggles on it.

There’s something vaguely Gaga about it, isn’t there? Since we still haven’t seen Kate Middleton’s wedding dress yet, let’s take this moment to assess the hat of the Celebrity Formerly Known as Posh Spice.

The pair, who drew plaudits for their stylish appearance at the service this morning, said it had been an honour to attend.

In a statement following the ceremony, the couple said: "Today's ceremony was beautiful and heartfelt. Catherine looked wonderfully elegant and we were honoured to be part of such a special, historical day for our country.

Victoria has been associated with numerous designers over the years. She famously took to the catwalk for Maria Grachvogel at London Fashion Week and has been a champion of Roberto Cavalli.

And for her own wedding to football superstar David she favoured an ivory dress by Vera Wang.

But the pregnant former Spice Girl has settled on one of her designs, which have brought her great acclaim in recent years.

Chelsy Davy, Harry's On-again, Off-again

Prince William's younger brother Harry has had a very public on-again, off-again relationship with Chelsy Davy.

But it is safe to assume that the couple is back on, considering the blond babe was on hand for the royal wedding. The 25-year-old arrived at the ceremony in an off-the-shoulder jacket and matching aqua shift dress -- one of two Alberta Ferretti outfits she had made for her by the Italian design house for the day. Matched with a gray lace Victoria Grant hat and nude patent-leather pumps, Davy looked smashing!

With all the subterfuge, it sounds like they are getting back together but a source close to the couple says that simply isn’t the case. The evening was nothing more than friends “catching up.” Really?

Davy is back in UK after spending six months traveling. She is expected to start a job at a prestigious law firm in London later this year.

It is also reported that Harry has asked Davy to accompany him to his brother’s wedding. The Prince William/Kate Middleton nuptials aren’t open to just anyone and whether Chelsy and Harry are together or just friends, she would be a likely choice for Prince Harry’s plus one because she could be trusted.

Harry can do alot better. She's not royalty material. Girl didnt even brush her hair, on one of the biggest weddings ever. Seriously!

I wonder if Chelsy cared to be invited to the wedding. I am sure there were many more guests who don't have the money and access to designers that she does, but most of them showed up looking their best.

The whole outfit is just odd. The messy hair and dull make up didn't help.

Westminster Abbey has a history that is 1,000 years old

London, April 28 (IANS) Westminster Abbey, where Prince William will marry Kate Middleton Friday, has a 1,000-year-old history and is the final resting place of 17 monarchs.

Benedictine monks first arrived at the site in the middle of the tenth century and started a tradition of daily worship that continues to this day, according to westminster-abbey.org.

It has been the coronation church since 1066 and is the final resting place of 17 monarchs.

The construction of the present church was begun by Henry III in 1245.

It is a treasure trove of paintings, stained glass, textiles and other artefacts.

It needs to come back to being in communion with Rome. Come join the bandwagon. If this happens, Anglicanism will cease to exist.

President Obama released his long-form birth certificate

Even before President Obama released his long-form birth certificate Wednesday morning, it was obvious to anyone who had examined the evidence that the president was born in the United States. Yet that didn't really matter: The "birther" movement, like the "truther" movement alleging U.S. complicity in the Sept. 11 attacks, was never really grounded in evidence. It was about distrust of the president. Which is why no amount of evidence will make it go away.

Already, well-known birther Orly Taitz, who has had lawsuits challenging the president's birth dismissed, is raising questions about the new document. She is suggesting that his race should be listed as "negro," not "African," and saying she maintains that the president isn't a "natural born citizen," as mandated by the Constitution, because both parents need to be , (That's not true.) Taitz also suggests the president is using a false social security number.

Another well-known birther, Phil Berg, also argued after the release that "the issue" is that Mr. Obama is not a natural born citizen. "Let's see his records coming back through immigration," he said.

The conservative news aggregator The Drudge Report is asking in its headlines, "is it real?" and "Composed of layers?" At the top of the site is a picture of potential GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump and the words "NOW LET'S SEE THE COLLEGE RECORDS." After reinvigorating the birther debate, the reality show host has recently pivoted to questioning whether Mr. Obama deserved to get into Ivy League schools. Like birtherism, it's an ostensible serious question that is ultimately a veiled attack on presidential legitimacy.

Nicollette Sheridan Gets Backup From Housewives

A former executive producer of Desperate Housewives has entered testimony that supports Nicollette Sheridan's timeline of events in her wrongful termination lawsuit against ABC and creator Marc Cherry, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lori Kirkland Baker, who worked on the ABC dramedy from May 2007 through May 2009, submitted a sworn declaration on April 9 that backs up Sheridan's claims about the order of events that lead up to her exit.

Nicollette Sheridan drops abuse claims from Desperate Housewives lawsuit

Sheridan, 47, filed a $20 million lawsuit in April 2010 claiming that Cherry hit her in the face and that she was fired from Desperate Housewives after she tried to complain to ABC, and because she is a woman.

"In fall of 2008, Mr. Cherry began talking with the writing staff, myself included, about killing off the Edie Britt character," Kirkland Baker said in her declaration, obtained by THR. "I have no recollection of any decision to kill off the Edie Britt character prior to fall of 2008."

Husband Of Janet Richardson Considers Suing After

The husband of a cruise passenger who died after she was dropped into the Arctic Ocean during a botched rescue attempt is considering suing over her death.

Janet Richardson, 73, was being evacuated from the ship because she was already ill when she fell into the water as paramedics tried to transfer her to a rescue boat on Thursday.

She spent seven minutes in the freezing water but was pulled out alive, however she died later that day.

The grandmother, from near Penrith, was aboard the Ocean Countess cruise liner on a trip along the coast of Norway when she was taken ill with internal bleeding and had to be taken ashore.

However, as she was being transferred into a lifeboat to be taken to hospital, she plunged into the sub-zero waters.

Her husband George, 78, told the Sun: 'I don't think I am going to say I am taking legal action or I am not taking legal action at the minute, I am considering it.

'I don't know if her falling in the water played any part in her death, we'll have to wait for the results of the post-mortem.

The Voice premiered to 11.8 million viewers during the 9-11 p.m. slot. Vera Svechina: woman sneaks into Google headquarters

A woman who claims Google is "inside her head and making her do things" quietly gained entry to the company's Silicon Valley headquarters last month, leaving behind a book and angry letter for the company's co-founders, police said on Friday.

Vera Svechina, a self-described filmmaker and former stripper, walked undetected into Google's main offices on March 14 and spent several minutes there, Mountain View police spokeswoman Liz Wylie said.

RELATED: Top 5 Google Labs projects

"An administrative staff member returned to her desk and found a book in Russian as well as a letter addressed to the two founders," Wylie told Reuters, referring to Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

"It didn't make any sense," Wylie said of the letter. "They were the ramblings of somebody with some kind of condition."

Google contacted police four days later, after reviewing security camera footage and finding that Svechina had breached the inner offices of the world's largest Internet company by walking in behind a visually impaired employee, Wylie said.

Police do not know the current whereabouts of Svechina, 37, who was last known to be living in San Francisco. She has not been arrested or charged in the case.

While Svechina was "a little bit angry" at Brin and Page in the letter, Wylie said, that did not constitute a criminal threat.

Company representatives for Google could not immediately be reached for comment.

Wylie said that Svechina came to Mountain View police last May to file a complaint against Google, claiming that the company "was inside her head and telling her to do things."

"At that point we evaluated her, determined that she was a threat to herself and took her on 5150 hold for psychiatric evaluation, because we felt she was potentially capable of hurting herself," Wylie said.

She said Svechina was taken to a hospital but has since been released.

According to the Business Insider blog, Zynga CEO and founder Mark Pincus obtained a restraining order against Svechina in March after filing a court declaration saying she had visited his home and threatened his wife and children.

On her blog, Svechina describes herself as a filmmaker who was born in Obninsk, Russia, studied at Moscow State University and worked in a Geisha club in Japan.

Emmylou Harris on Cover Songs, Gram Parsons and Her Canadian

Country legend Emmylou Harris has made a career of picking overlooked gems from the world's best songwriters and owning them. As an interpreter, she digs deep to uncover the gentle soul and beating heart of a song; even tired staples are born anew when filtered through her crystalline voice.

However, in recent years, the 12-time Grammy Award-winner has taken to recording more of her own material. Her new disc, 'Hard Bargain, features 11 original tunes, and two covers including a title cut courtesy of Canadian songwriter Ron Sexsmith.

Emmylou Harris spoke with Spinner about that new disc, the mysterious songwriting process, her time with Gram Parsons, and her admiration for Canadian songwriters.

Maybe I was lazy, or maybe I was nervous that I wouldn't come up with something good. I knew I could write, but there were all these great songs out there by other people, ready for the plucking. Perhaps I had exhausted some of my song-finding talents, but after 'Wrecking Ball' I decided to put on my writing hat.

Michael Douglas: Catherine Zeta-jones "Relieved"

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have had a rough year, but things are finally looking up for the New York-based couple.

After all, just months after Douglas, 66, beat stage 4 throat cancer, his wife announced she was seeking treatment for bipolar II disorder in April.

When asked by Winfrey about how his cancer diagnosis (he has been cancer-free since January) changed him, Douglas choked up and said, “I have a much deeper appreciation of family and friends.” His wife, meanwhile, is doing “great,” and is currently shooting a film in Louisiana. “I think she’s relieved because she has a much better understanding [of her bipolar disorder],” Douglas said. The actor also explained that Zeta-Jones didn’t originally plan on disclosing her health issues but was “outed” by someone at the facility: “Some other patient probably said, ‘Hey, you won’t believe who’s in here now.’”

During his own treatment, Douglas said he didn't want "a lot of fuss and attention," and Zeta-Jones, 41, reacted similarly. "She's Welsh," he explained. "The Welsh, it's all stiff upper lip and not letting your feelings show."

Now that he's cancer free, Douglas says his wife, whom he wed in 2000, has finally been able to "relax."

"She's great. She's shooting a movie down in Louisiana, and I think she's relieved she has a better understanding [of bipolar II]," he told the talk show host, 57.

he actor also addressed his son Cameron’s current jail stint for selling crystal meth, saying that Cameron is “in real good positive shape.” One bonus: The Oprah Winfrey Show is apparently a must-see TV with the other inmates, or, as Douglas put it to Oprah, “Your show is very popular in the house.”

LeAnn Rimes’s Wedding Accessories: Old, New, Borrowed and Blue

LeAnn Rimes followed the age-old tradition of wearing something old, new, borrowed and blue when she married Eddie Cibrian on Friday night — and she did it in sparkling style. “Old” came courtesy of jeweler Neil Lane: Rimes pinned his $250,000 platinum art deco brooch (it has 25 carats of diamonds!) to the waist of her handmade Reem Acra gown. “It was an absolutely stunning vintage piece and I think it completed the dress,” Rimes — who also dazzled in a pair of Lane’s 10-carat diamond earrings — tells PEOPLE. “New” was represented by Rimes’ most meaningful jewelry yet: three wedding bands — standing for Cibrian and his two sons, Mason, 7, and Jake, 4 — from Cibrian’s childhood friend Brent Polacheck of Polacheck’s Jewelers

“From the very beginning, LeAnn was very expressive about the importance and symbolism of three bands,” Polacheck tells PEOPLE. “His boys are an incredibly important part of their lives and she wanted to incorporate her feelings for them into her rings.” The rose-gold bands with rose-cut pear-shaped and single-cut round diamonds also match Rimes’s 5-carat engagement ring. Polacheck describes the groom’s ring — sandblasted rose gold paved with black diamonds on the outer inside rims — as “sexy and tough at the same time.” To further personalize her husband’s ring, Rimes added an inscription inside: “I love you more.” “Borrowed” came by way of designer Ippolita, who lent Rimes $12,000 worth of her rose five- and two-diamond bangles. Rimes added a modern twist to her look by stacking a mixture of the bracelets — 10 on each arm — for her walk down the aisle. And for the final touch? “I had a blue garter,” Rimes playfully reveals. “And a blue Hanky Panky thong that said ‘I do’ [in Swarovski crystals].”

Emma Watson leaving Brown

Emma Watson won't be returning to Brown University, her rep confirmed. The "Harry Potter" star, who announced earlier this year that she temporarily left the Ivy League school to concentrate on her professional commitments, will be transferring to another school, but not because of the bullying rumors.
clearpxl

Last week, it was reported that the brainy Brit beauty was being taunted at the university. Apparently, her colleagues couldn't help but make references to "Harry Potter" whenever she got correct answers in class.

But her rep, Vanessa Davies, told the Daily Mail that the report was false, adding that Watson, 21, made some very good friends during her stay in the university. However, Davies also confirmed another rumor that she is leaving Brown.

The rep explained that Watson simply decided to pursue a course that is not offered at Brown. She was taking European women's history and drama. It isn't revealed what course she intends to take next and where she plans to enroll at.

Watson is currently working on a number of fashion projects. She will also be promoting the part two of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" this July.

Charlie Sheen's "Goddess" Bree Dumped Him Via Text

The 45-year-old told a Ft. Lauderdale audience on Saturday that his girlfriend Rachel "Bree" Olson had broken up with him via text message, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Charlie Sheen sometimes believes he has everything: beautiful women, a recreational drug habit, legions of fans, and some other stuff.

In March, just when Sheen needed her most, Olson walked out on him — leaving him admittedly "sad" — before returning the next day. Now after agreeing to accompany him on his Violent Torpedo of Truth tour, Bree dumped him yet again. "The actor kicked off [his Ft. Lauderdale show] by revealing that one of his goddesses, Rachel 'Bree' Olson, had broken up with him via text message," according to the New York Post. Sheen later admitted he's handling multiple women at once "not well," and he's down to only one goddess. He's already eyeing a new girl, though: He invited Lindsay Lohan to hang out with him for 24 hours. "I would hug her and let her know it's gonna be okay," he said." Now that would be a couple.

When one fan asked the self-proclaimed "warlock" how he handled dating multiple women at once, he answered: "Not well, because one ["Goddess"] left."

Tornado Destruction: St. Louis Residents Clean Up After Storm

Whitney Curtis/Getty Images(ST. LOUIS) — People in the St. Louis area are recovering in the wake of a monster tornado — the worst in nearly a half century — that damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes and ripped through the major airport over the weekend.

New damage totals show some 2,700 buildings around St. Louis damaged, and 100 homes destroyed, including Marcy Baker’s house.

She was spending Easter weekend in Dallas with her family when she got a call that her house had been hit. She drove home 12 hours to find her house destroyed.

“I have a 15-month-old, I’m pregnant. It’s devastating,” Baker said.

At a nearby Catholic church, the 40-foot steeple toppled during the tornado that struck in the middle of Good Friday services.

Power was knocked out to as many as 47,000 customers after the tornado. On Sunday, some 26,000 customers remained without power and officials said many could remain in the dark until Monday. No one was killed and a handful of injuries were reported.

At Lambert Airport, surveillance video captured the exact moment a 135-mile-an-hour tornado struck, ripping off the roof and sending metal flying. Officials are fixing hundreds of panes of broken glass. It could take months and millions of dollars to fully complete the clean up.

Flights were getting back to normal after the airport reopened Saturday. Airport director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge says the continuing repairs to the airport shouldn’t impact travelers.

“The majority of the windows are boarded up, still doing just a little bit of work on that but the airport itself is structurally sound,” she said.

Yet despite all this, victims are counting their blessings. There were no reported deaths as a result of the tornado.

“It’s a miracle out of all the devastation. There were absolutely no fatalities, and very few injuries,” said Terry Hayes.

Sathya Sai Baba: Hindu Guru Dead At 84

Sathya Sai Baba, a Hindu guru who was considered a holy man by followers, died Sunday at a southern Indian hospital. He was 84 years old.

Sai Baba was born on Nov. 23, 1926 as Sathyanarayana Raju. He reportedly performed miracles and claimed he was the reincarnation of Hindu holy man Sai Baba of Shirdi in 1940, the Associated Press reported.

"Sri Satya Sai Baba was a spiritual leader who inspired millions to lead a moral and meaningful life, even as they followed the religion of their choice," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in a statement, the Associated Press reported. "The nation deeply mourns his passing away."

Throughout his life, Sai Baba garnered a large community of followers and devotees that included celebrities and politicians.
In 1963, he suffered a stroke and heart attacks and began using a wheelchair after he fractured his hip in 2005, according to the Associated Press.

On March 28, Sai Baba was hospitalized and on dialysis.

He helped to expand his hometown of Puttaparti with the construction of the Prasanthi Nilayam ashram – a religious retreat, in 1950. He also set up a hospital and schools operated by his Satya Sai Central Trust through donations, according to the Associated Press.

Funds from the $8.9 million trust helped to build spiritual centers in other major Indian cities such as Mumbai.

Health problems had prevented Sai Baba from appearing in public in recent years.

At this time Metallica started their set closing out the Big 4 Festival, I was feeling pretty metal.

And, when I tell "metal," I mean there was not a smile on my face and  punch the rest of the evening away.

Metallica wowed fans this weekend with a historic uniting of the most significant bands in heavy metal.

Metallica took the main headline slot at the 'Big 4' festival, which was held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.

I spent my day (Instead of enjoying a day of music) getting pushed around and hassled by rude dudes. During the first song Anthrax played, I saw a guy get clocked in a mosh pit. A  girl (Who was crying) was carried out of the crowd missing a shoe

The irony of it is that throwing up a middle finger in a field of headbangers is about as attention-grabbing as holding a pen to take notes.

So, this brings us back to Metallica.

The thrash metal quartet opened with "Creeping Death," from "Ride the Lightning." Vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield said, "Metallica is with you. Are you with Metallica?"

Termites devour 10m rupees at bank

An army of termites munched through 10 million rupees (£137,000) in currency notes stored in a steel chest at a bank, police in northern India said yesterday.

The bank manager discovered the damage when he opened the reinforced room in an old bank building on Wednesday.

"It's a matter of investigation how termites attacked bundles of currency notes stacked in a steel chest," said Navneet Rana, a police officer.

The money was put in the chest in January. Termites had damaged bank furniture and documents in the past.

The police have registered a case of negligence against bank officials in Barabanki, a town 20 miles southwest of Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh state capital.

In India, police register a case before opening an investigation.

Kelly McGillis on Coming Out, Shame, Religion, and Vampires

Kelly McGillis shot to fame in 1980s blockbusters like Witness, Top Gun, and The Accused, serving fierce hair and the requisite attitude.

After a 10-year hiatus, she's back in Stake Land, a spare and arty horror flick with minimal dialogue ("Stake the bitch!") and Kelly cutting an imposing figure as a nun running from both vampires and a Bible-thumper out to jumpstart a gang-rape.

Meanwhile, her off-screen life has been anything but spare and minimal. Twice married to men, Kelly came out as a lesbian in '09, and last year she had a civil union ceremony in New Jersey with girlfriend Melanie Leis. Intrigued, I rang Kelly to talk sexuality, religion, and, of course, vampires.
